Days 5 & 6 - Kirtland to Boston trip July/August 2024
July 28th & 29th, 2024 - Penn Yang, Watkins Glen, Harmony, PA, and Legoland NY
Sunday, July 28, 2024 - Day 5
We wanted to get an early start on the day, so after breakfast, we drive 45 minutes to Penn Yan, a quaint village on the tip of Lake Keuka, one of New York's Finger Lakes, for church. Church started at 9 AM and was a small branch held in a small building with around 20 or so members. We saw some Amish on the way into town on a carriage with two of their teenagers on the back of their carriage behind them.

After church we drive for another 45 minutes to the Watkins Glen State Park. We parked on the street and entered the park to explore and experience the many waterfalls and picturesque scenery. We walked up the glen on the main path, then back on a wooded path. It was incredible.
We grabbed salads, chicken tenders, and fries at a nearby Walmart and ate in the car as we drove for another 1 hour and 45 minutes to the Priesthood Restoration Site in PA. We were able to so through the visitor' center, tour the Hale family home, Joseph and Emma's home, the graveyard where Emma's parents and Joseph and Emma's firstborn are buried. We also walked around the sugar bush where they would tap the maple trees for syrup. It was here that John the Baptist appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery and restored the Aaronic Priesthood to the earth. Joseph and Oliver baptized each other in the Susquehanna River. Later, not far from Harmony, Joseph and Oliver received a visitation from Peter James and John and received the Melchizedek priesthood. From there, we drove across the highway and down to the Susquehanna river, to the spot where Joseph and Oliver were baptized.

Here in their home in Harmony, Joseph translated, with Emma as his scribe about 2/3 of the Book of Mormon. It was here that Oliver Cowdrey came to meet Joseph, became his scribe, and continued the work until the persecution became too great. At that point, they went to the Whitmer farm.

As we were heading our of Susquehanna county, we drove past the Starrucca Viaduct, a stone arch bridge that spans Starrucca Creek. It was an amazing sight
We continued on our way and arrived in Goshen, New York for Legoland the next day. We stayed at the Fairfield Inn and & suites in Goshen. Monday, July 29, 2024 - Day 6
We ate breakfast in the hotel and headed for Legoland. We were one of the first people there. It was a very hot day and we closed the park ( it opened at 10 AM and closed at 6 PM). We traded minifigures, did rides, and cooled down in their small splash park. We walked around miniland but it was so hot it was hard to be in the sun and heat for long stretches.
We then drove to Philadelphia and stayed at the Inn at Penn, a Hilton Hotel. Joe dropped us off and then drove the car to return the rental car. This was our last day with the car. We spent the night in this higher end Hilton hotel.

Joe dropped the family at the hotel, then took the car to the rental drop off at the train station for an after hours rental drop off. He then walked about a mile from the train station to our hotel.
